Not every operation wants a crossbow. The bow-and-arrow version of the Medi-Dart does the same job at closer quarters, which suits yards, small pastures and anyone who would rather work in tight than take a longer shot. The animal is treated where she stands and the rest of the herd is left where it is. The kit is built around a 30 lb recurve bow, and Medi-Dart puts the working range at roughly 6 m (20 ft). The dart holds up to 30 cc, with the valve arrangement setting a lower limit of 10 cc that has nothing to do with what should be given and everything to do with how the valve functions. Air pumped into the tail section before the shot is what drives the plunger once the needle is in. Ejection is the part that makes the system practical. When the barrel empties, the push rod drives the ejector loop ahead, the needle is lifted out of the animal and the dart drops to the ground for you to pick up. Nothing stays in the animal and nothing is thrown away, which is why there is no cost per shot. Practise before you use it on cattle. A recurve at 6 m is not difficult, but placement matters and the only way to know where your darts are going is to put some into a target with the same charge and the same dart you will use in the field. Needles, o-rings and spare darts are all stocked separately. Talk to your veterinarian about what you are administering and follow the label.
