Medi-Dart pole extension kit (MDEK)

Every producer has had the animal that is quiet enough to walk up to but not worth the trouble of gathering. This kit is built for exactly that animal. It gives a single intramuscular or subcutaneous injection at arm's length plus a pole, with the animal standing where she is and the rest of the herd left alone. The kit is complete rather than a starting point. It ships with a 1.5 m (5 ft) aluminum pole, the air pump used to pressurise the tail section, a 50 ml bottle of castor oil for lubrication, the instruction manual, and the extension syringe itself made up with its intramuscular needle, valve seat, valve cap, nuts, push rod, plunger, barrel, tail section and o-ring. Reach works out to around 1.8 m (6 ft) with the pole in hand. The syringe holds up to 35 cc and the valve will not deliver a charge under 10 cc, so the barrel volume is a hardware limit worth knowing before you plan a session. Once the barrel empties, the push rod drives the ejector loop ahead, the needle comes back out of the animal and the syringe drops free for retrieval. Nearly everything in the kit is reusable, which is the point of the system. The o-ring is the item that does wear out and is worth stocking. Needles are good for roughly fifty injections on the pole and can be resharpened with a file. What you put in the barrel, and whether this is the right way to give it, is a decision for your veterinarian and the label on the product.
