The plunger is what actually pushes the contents of the barrel out through the needle when the trapped air behind it is released, and the cap on the end of it is the part that meets the barrel wall. It is a small piece of hardware that carries the whole shot. Wear here shows up as a shot that does not fully empty. If a barrel is coming back with more left in it than it should, and you have already checked the o-ring and the valve group, the plunger cap is the next thing to look at.
