Medi-Dart new half-moon pushrod (MDHPR)
The new half-moon push rod for Medi-Dart syringes, the rod required when running the current #6 needle.
Details
This small rod is the reason a lot of #6 needles get blamed for a fault they do not have. When Medi-Dart moved to the #6, the ejection arrangement changed with it, and the half-moon push rod is the part that makes the new geometry work. Fit a #6 to a dart still carrying the plain push rod and the ejection will not be right. The rod does the work at the end of the shot. Once air pressure has driven the plunger down and the barrel is empty, the rod pushes the ejector loop ahead, which lifts the needle out of the animal so the syringe releases and falls where you can pick it up. Without that, you are retrieving your equipment the hard way. If you are running a #5 or one of the lighter grades, you do not need this rod. It is specifically part of the newer #6 setup, along with a wingnut in either the 13 mm (1/2 in) size for cows and bulls or the 9.5 mm (3/8 in) size for younger cattle up to yearlings. It is a reusable part and it fits into the syringe assembly rather than being consumed each shot, but it is worth inspecting for wear or bending when you strip the syringe down for cleaning. A rod that is not straight will not push the loop squarely. As always, what goes in the barrel is between you, your veterinarian and the product label.
