The barrel is the part you actually watch. It is transparent so you can see what is in it, see the plunger travel and see whether the shot went the way you thought it did, and it is the piece most likely to get scratched, clouded or cracked over years of use. This is the barrel for the extension pole syringe, holding up to 35 cc, which is the larger of the two Medi-Dart barrel sizes. The crossbow dart uses its own barrel, so check which system you are ordering for. The valve on these syringes will not deliver a charge under 10 cc regardless of barrel size, which is a design limit rather than any sort of recommendation about what to give. A barrel that has gone cloudy is more than a cosmetic problem, because not being able to see the plunger position is how people end up unsure whether an animal got a full shot. Scoring on the inside wall is worse again, since the plunger cap has to seal against that surface, and a scored barrel will let pressure past instead of pushing ahead of it. The barrel is a reusable part with a service life rather than a consumable. Wash it out after use, keep it lightly lubricated with castor oil as Medi-Dart recommends, and store the syringe assembled rather than loose in a box. What goes into the barrel, and whether it should, is a matter for your veterinarian and the label on the product.
