One dart is enough right up until the moment it is not. An animal that needs a second treatment, or a second animal in the same pasture, and you are back at the truck rinsing and recharging while the bunch drifts off. A made-up spare dart in the case is the fix, and it is why most kits ship with two. This is the crossbow dart complete, assembled and ready to charge. It holds up to 30 cc, and the valve arrangement means it will not deliver below 10 cc, which is a limit of the hardware rather than any sort of recommendation. Air pumped into the tail section is what pushes the plunger down the barrel once the needle is in the animal, and when the barrel is empty the ejector loop drives ahead and lifts the needle out so the dart drops free to be picked up. It does not include the crossbow, the air pump or a practice end. It takes the standard Medi-Dart needle range, #2 through #6 in either intramuscular or subcutaneous pattern, with the current #6 requiring both the half-moon push rod and a wingnut to eject as designed. Wingnuts run 13 mm (1/2 in) for cows and bulls and 9.5 mm (3/8 in) for younger cattle up to yearlings. The dart is fully reusable and there is no cost per shot. Strip it and wash it after use, keep the barrel and o-ring lightly oiled with castor oil, and confirm it holds pressure before you head out.
