Small preformed ponds and half-barrel water features freeze faster than large ones and have nowhere for gas to go once the lid of ice closes. This unit sits on the bottom rather than bobbing on the surface, which keeps it out of the wind and out of the way. It draws 300 watts, measures 23 cm (9 in) across, and comes with a 4.6 m (15 ft) cord, long enough to reach a house outlet from a garden pond without an extension. K&H rates it for ponds up to about 1,140 L (300 gallons) and 46 cm (18 in) deep or less. It is submersible only, with no float ring. An internal preset thermostat holds the water just above freezing and switches off when it can. The unit is MET listed, safe for fish and preformed pond shells, and carries a two-year limited warranty. It has inlet ports sized for 6 mm and 10 mm line (quarter-inch and three-eighths-inch), so a small water or air pump can be plumbed through it. That is worth doing if you already run an aerator, since moving water and a de-icer together hold an opening more reliably than either alone. Set it in place while there is still open water, and keep it fully submerged whenever it is plugged in. There is no on-off switch. Use a grounded, outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection, route the cord where it cannot be chewed by rodents or nicked by a shovel, and lift the unit by the body rather than the lead.
