Frozen waterers are the reason a lot of small flocks get watered three times a day in January. This one holds 9.5 L (2.5 gal) and heats itself, so a coop of birds can be left to drink through a cold day without someone carrying a kettle out to it. The tank is rigid ABS plastic that will not rust, and it feeds a shallow drinking tray by gravity. A spill-proof cap lets you flip the filled tank over without losing the contents on your boots, and the fill opening is 4.5 cm (1.75 in) across. The tray carries a removable filter ring that lifts out for cleaning, which matters more than it sounds, because poultry water goes green and gritty quickly. The heated version draws 60 watts and is MET listed. K&H backs it with a two-year limited warranty. Set it level and up off the litter on a block or paver so bedding does not get scratched into the tray. Clean it out regularly with baking soda and vinegar; a handful of smooth stones swirled inside the tank scours it without scratching. Everything that touches water comes apart for washing. Being an electrical unit in a damp coop, it wants a grounded, outdoor-rated circuit on a GFCI. Route the cord where birds cannot stand on it and rodents cannot reach it, because a chewed lead in a coop full of dry bedding is not a risk worth taking. Inspect the cord each autumn before you plug it in for the season.
