Two dogs, or one big one, will go through a small heated bowl before noon on a cold clear day. This is the deepest and largest capacity in the range at 5.7 L (1.5 gal), roughly 25 cm (10 in) across the inside and 11 cm (4.25 in) deep, in a granite-finish moulded plastic that hides mud better than the lighter colours. It draws the same 25 watts as the mid-sized bowls, which is worth noting: the extra volume does not cost extra power, because the thermostat is holding water just above freezing rather than warming it. Construction is BPA-free plastic with the element and wiring sealed inside the body, a 1.7 m (5.5 ft) steel-wrapped cord, and a MET listing. The extra depth is the reason to buy it and also the reason to place it thoughtfully. Full, it is heavy enough to stay put, but it is also a lot of water to spill in a kennel, so keep it on a level surface where a knock will not soak bedding. In a run shared by more than one animal, the wide mouth lets two drink without crowding. Hand wash with mild dish soap and dry the exterior before it goes back on power. For outdoor duty use a grounded outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection, keep the cord tight to a wall or post rather than looped where it can be chewed, and replace the unit rather than repairing a damaged lead.
