Chopping ice out of water pails morning and night is one of those winter chores that eats time and tempers, and stock that has to wait for fresh water drinks less than it should. This heater drops into the pail and stays there, running only when the water needs it. It draws 80 watts and is thermostatically controlled, switching on and off on its own to hold the water just above freezing rather than warming it. The element carries a durable enamel finish and is rated for use in plastic or metal pails holding up to roughly 61 L (16 gal). The cord runs 145 cm (57 in), and a cord safety clip is included so the lead can be routed up and over the rim instead of lying where hooves and teeth find it. The unit is MET listed to UL 499. There is no switch on it. Once plugged in it runs continuously, with the internal thermostat doing the deciding, so it should be unplugged when the pail is emptied. It must be fully submerged whenever it is powered, since running the element dry will ruin it. Keep the water level topped up if your pails get drunk down hard on a cold day. Run it on a properly grounded outdoor-rated circuit protected by a GFCI, and check the cord over each fall for cracking or chew damage before the season starts. K&H does not recommend extension cords with this heater; plan the pail location around a fixed outlet instead.
