Plastic bowls scratch, and scratched bowls hold slime no matter how hard you scrub. This version puts a stainless steel surface where the water sits, which cleans up faster and stands up to years of scouring. It takes about 3.5 L (120 oz) and measures roughly 23 cm (9 in) across by 6.5 cm (2.5 in) deep, so it is wider and shallower than the plastic bowls of similar capacity. That wide, shallow shape suits animals that dislike putting their whole face into a deep dish, and it makes any ice that does form easy to knock out. Power draw is 25 watts, managed by an internal thermostat that cycles the element on only as needed. The cord runs 1.7 m (5.5 ft) with a steel wrap for abrasion resistance, and the bowl is MET listed. Stainless takes a hot soapy wash and a rinse without complaint, but the base contains the electronics, so wash by hand and never submerge the unit or run it through a dishwasher. Dry the underside before plugging it in. For outdoor use, feed it from a grounded, outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection. Route and secure the cord so a dog on a chain or a curious calf cannot get slack in its mouth, and look the whole lead over each autumn before the first freeze.
