A 250-watt pond de-icer, 15 cm across, that floats or converts to submersible to hold an opening in the ice.
Details
Fish do not need a warm pond over winter; they need one that is not sealed. This de-icer keeps a patch of open water so gas exchange continues, and does it on 250 watts, modest enough to leave running from freeze-up to thaw without wincing at the meter. The body is a compact 15 cm (6 in) across in black, with a 3.7 m (12 ft) cord. Unscrewing the float ring converts it from a floating unit to a submersible one in a couple of minutes, which is useful if wind pushes the float into a corner or the pond ices unevenly. An internal preset thermostat handles operation, with no adjustment and no switch. It is MET listed, will not damage pond liners, and carries a two-year limited warranty. Wattage selection matters more than pond volume on its own. K&H publishes a zone chart matching output to climate, and Alberta sits well toward the cold end of it. A 250-watt unit suits a smaller or sheltered pond; a larger or more exposed one will want more output rather than a second small unit fighting the same problem. Put it out before the pond locks up so it starts in open water, and keep the element submerged at all times it is powered. Run it on a grounded outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection, secure the cord along the bank clear of chewing and foot traffic, and lift the unit by its body rather than the cord.
