K&H Pet Products Thermo-pond Deluxe 1500w
A 1500-watt pond de-icer, 23 cm across, that converts between floating and submersible for large ponds in hard cold.
Details
When a pond is big enough or the cold deep enough that a low-wattage floater loses ground, this is the heavy end of the range. At 1500 watts it has the output to keep an opening in ice that would close over a smaller unit within a night. It measures 23 cm (9 in) across, the larger of the two body sizes in the Deluxe line, and the cord runs 3.7 m (12 ft). The float ring unscrews, so the same unit works floating on the surface or sitting submerged on the bottom, depending on how your pond behaves and where the wind sets. An internal preset thermostat runs it, with nothing to dial in and no on-off switch. It is MET listed and safe for pond liners and preformed ponds, with a two-year limited warranty. Size it against the wattage-to-climate zone chart rather than by pond volume alone. On the prairies, a pond that would take a 250-watt unit in a milder zone often wants considerably more, and running a de-icer that is too small simply means it runs constantly and still loses. Consider the electrical load as well: 1500 watts is most of a 15-amp circuit on its own, so it should not share with much else. It has to be in water whenever it is powered, since running the element in air will destroy it. Use a grounded, outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection, run the cord along the bank where it will not be chewed or damaged by machinery, and never move the unit by pulling on the lead.
