Details
A pond that freezes over completely traps the gases produced by decaying material underneath it. Keeping a single hole open through the ice is the job, and this unit draws only 100 watts to do it. It floats and measures 30 cm (12 in) across. An internal preset thermostat runs it, so there is nothing to set. It maintains an opening roughly its own diameter and idles when it does not need to work. The cord is a generous 3.7 m (12 ft), which usually reaches a bank outlet without an extension. K&H lists it as MET Safety Listed, and its product page says "Safely use with a plastic pond or a pond liner" and "Friendly to fish--prevents the buildup of toxic gases under the ice". One-year warranty. K&H designs it for ponds at least 46 cm (18 in) deep. It is a floating design only and is not made to run submerged, so it needs open water to sit in when you put it out, before the surface locks up hard. There is no switch; it works whenever it is plugged in and the thermostat decides the rest. Feed it from a grounded, outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection, and secure the cord along the bank so it is not lying loose where it can be chewed or driven over. Never lift or reposition it by the cord.
