K&H Pet Products Thermo-Pond 3.0
A 100-watt floating pond de-icer, 30 cm across, that holds a hole open in the ice so trapped gases can escape.
Details
A pond that freezes over completely traps the gases produced by decaying material underneath it, and that is what kills fish over winter rather than the cold itself. Keeping a single hole open through the ice is the whole job, and it does not take much power to do it. This unit floats, measures 30 cm (12 in) across, and draws 100 watts. An internal preset thermostat runs it, so there is nothing to set. It maintains an opening roughly its own diameter and idles when it does not need to work. The cord is a generous 3.7 m (12 ft), which usually reaches a bank outlet without an extension. It is MET listed, the element will not burn a plastic pond liner while submerged, and it is safe around fish. One-year warranty. K&H rates it for ponds up to about 3,800 L (1,000 gallons) with a minimum depth of 46 cm (18 in). Deeper or larger ponds may want a second unit or a higher-wattage de-icer. It is a floating design only and is not made to run submerged, so it needs open water to sit in when you put it out, before the surface locks up hard. There is no switch; it works whenever it is plugged in and the thermostat decides the rest. Feed it from a grounded, outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection, and secure the cord along the bank so it is not lying loose where it can be chewed or driven over. Never lift or reposition it by the cord.
