Fiske's formulates it as a moisturizing dressing intended to help soothe irritated or sensitive skin. It has the body of a salve rather than a lotion, so it stays on the spot you put it rather than running off in the first minute or wiping away on a blanket. Dry flaky skin under a heavy winter coat, a wind-burned muzzle, an area rubbed thin by tack; all of it is familiar in this country, and the common thread is skin that has lost its moisture barrier. Clean the area and let it dry before you start, then work the salve in with your fingers instead of dabbing at the surface. Keep at it daily rather than once and forget. If something looks infected, is deep, is hot or swelling, or simply is not improving, that is a conversation with your veterinarian and not a job for a topical salve.
