Hooves in this part of the world go through a cycle that wrecks them. Wet spring corrals soften the horn, a dry summer pulls that moisture straight back out, and by August you have cracks and chips and a farrier fighting to hold a nail. Balm works by slowing the swing, keeping moisture in the hoof wall so it stays flexible instead of turning hard and brittle. Fiske's builds this one with no petroleum in it, which is the reason a lot of horse people use it in the first place. It is a balm rather than a thin oil, so it stays where it is put and does not simply run off the wall and into the bedding. The litre size suits a barn with more than one horse, or anyone applying through a whole season rather than now and then. Pick and brush the foot out first, then work the balm over the wall, the coronet band, the sole and the frog cleft. Applied two or three times a week through the dry months it does far more good than a heavy coat slapped on once the wall has already split.
