Fiske's makes this the traditional way, cold process, which keeps the glycerine formed during saponification in the bar rather than stripping it out and selling it on. That is the practical difference between this and a supermarket bar. Glycerine draws moisture, so the soap cleans without leaving your hands feeling scoured. The base is natural oils of olive, palm, coconut and castor with organic shea butter worked in. Apple cider and cardamom is the scent, warm and slightly spiced rather than perfumed. Hands that spend a day inside gloves, on wire, in grain dust and on a wash rack take a beating, and dry cracked knuckles in a Prairie winter split open and stay split all season. A bar that cleans and moisturizes at the same time is worth keeping at the mud room sink and another in the barn. Set it on a draining dish instead of in a puddle. Cold-process soap is softer than a commercial detergent bar and lasts considerably longer if it gets a chance to dry out between uses.
