This is the refill size. If you are treating a string of horses, running a boarding barn, or you simply empty a small tub every season, 2.5 litres works out a good deal better than buying the same product four times over. Decant some into a smaller jar with a brush for daily use and keep the big tub closed in the tack room. What is inside is the same balm. Petroleum-free, thick enough to stay on the hoof wall instead of running off, and its job is moisture balance: keeping the horn flexible so it bends rather than chipping. Dry hard feet crack, cracked feet throw shoes and lose nails, and on frozen rutted ground a horse with a compromised foot gets sore in a hurry. Store it somewhere it will not freeze solid. A balm that has been sitting in an unheated tack room at minus thirty is difficult to dig out of the tub and harder still to brush on evenly, so bring it inside overnight before a big application day or keep the working jar in the house.
