The tin most people mean when they say saddle soap. Fiebing's has been selling this formula worldwide for saddlery, boots and other smooth leather articles for well over a century, and 340g keeps a tack room going a long time. It contains glycerine and foaming agents, so it cleans while putting a little moisture back rather than stripping the leather bare. Dampen a cloth or brush, work up a lather on the cake, and clean the leather in circular motions. Wipe the excess away with a clean damp cloth. Let it dry naturally rather than in front of a heater, then buff with a soft cloth or a brush. The yellow soap does not transfer colour, so it is safe on natural and light leather as well as dark. Set a rhythm instead of waiting for a crisis. Tack that gets wiped down after use never needs the two-hour rescue job, and leather that has been let go until it is grey and cracking at the fold is past what any soap will fix. Keep the lid on so the cake stays workable.
