A conditioner for the mane and tail with enough slip in it to get a comb through a tangle without pulling half the hair out. Fiebing's says it works on wet hair and on matted or badly knotted hair, and that only a small amount is needed per application. That last part is the practical bit. Start with less than you think. Work it through with your fingers first and let it do its job before the comb comes out — dragging a comb through a dry knot is how tails go thin at the dock. On a bad tangle, take it in sections from the bottom up rather than driving the comb down from the top. Fiebing's describes the finish as silky and says it resists dust and dirt, which is worth something on a windy day in a dry paddock. One habit worth keeping: leave slippery coat products off the saddle area and the withers before you ride, and off the mane the day before you plan to band or braid. Slick hair does not hold a band, and a slick wither is a problem you only need to meet once.
