The quart size of Fiebing's 100% pure neatsfoot oil. It is the practical amount for the annual go-over — a saddle, a set of harness, a couple of pairs of boots and whatever else got hung up in the fall and forgotten about. Pure means pure. There are no synthetic oils blended in, which is the difference between this and the neatsfoot compound. Clean everything with saddle soap first and let it dry right through. In a cold shop that is a day, not an hour. Then apply thin coats with a cloth or a sponge and wait between them. Leather absorbs oil far more slowly at ten degrees than at twenty, so a cold shop calls for patience rather than more oil. Test a hidden area. It darkens leather, and the amount is not predictable across different hides. And know when to stop. The goal is supple leather that still holds its shape, not soft leather. Stirrup leathers, billets and cinch straps that have gone limp from too much oil do not firm back up.
