The pint bottle of pure neatsfoot oil — enough to do a saddle and the tack that goes with it without committing to a jug. Neatsfoot oil is a natural rendered oil that has been used on saddlery for a very long time, and its job is straightforward. It replaces the oils that have left the leather. Every hot, windy summer day and every cold, dry month in an unheated shop takes a little more out. Wash the leather with saddle soap and let it dry completely, because oiling over dirt and oiling over damp leather both end badly. Then apply thin coats with a cloth. Get into the flesh side and the underside of straps, where leather dries hardest and where nobody thinks to look. Let each coat go in for several hours before adding another. It will darken the leather. Test a hidden spot and accept that the final shade depends on the hide, its age and whatever finish is already on it. And go easy — over-oiled leather stretches and goes soft, and that part is permanent.
