The gallon jug of 100% natural neatsfoot oil — no synthetic blend and no extenders, unlike the compound. This is what a saddle shop, a harness maker or a big outfit buys when the small bottles stop keeping up. Handle it like a bulk product. Pour off what you need into a smaller bottle or a shallow tray and keep the jug capped and clean, because once dirt or a used rag gets into four litres of oil it stays there for good. Store it out of direct sun. The application does not change with the size. Clean leather, dried right through, then thin coats worked in with a cloth or a sponge, with hours between coats to let the oil travel through the fibres. Test a hidden area first — pure neatsfoot darkens leather and different hides take it differently. Spring is when most of this gets used in western Canada. Everything that came off in October and sat in a cold, dry shop until April comes out stiff and thirsty, and that is the right time for a proper oiling, done in thin coats over several days rather than all in one afternoon.
