Details
Glycerine saddle soap already in liquid form. No bar to lather, no bucket — pour some onto a damp sponge and go. The 473ml bottle is the everyday size for one or two saddles and the bridles that go with them. Wipe the loose dirt off with a dry cloth first. Put the soap on a sponge and work it into the leather in circular motions to raise a lather, concentrating on the places that collect sweat and hand grease: the seat, the fenders, the reins, the underside of a cinch billet. Let it air dry away from a heater or a wood stove, because drying leather fast is how it goes hard. Buff with a clean cloth afterwards. Soap cleans and does not condition much. On leather that has gone dry — and anything stored in an unheated shop through a prairie winter will have — follow up with a conditioner or neatsfoot oil once the soap has dried. Smooth leather only. Keep the bottle somewhere it will not freeze.
