L-tryptophan is an amino acid the body uses on the pathway to serotonin, and it is the active ingredient in most of the calming pastes sold for horses. This one comes in a 90 g single-dose syringe intended to be given ahead of the thing you are worried about — a first trailer ride, clipping, the farrier, a busy show ground, a vet visit on a horse that has learned to dread them. Be honest about the evidence. Research on oral tryptophan in horses is mixed, and it is not a sedative — a horse that genuinely panics will still panic. What owners commonly report is a horse that takes the edge off slightly and is easier to work with, and for a lot of situations that is enough. If you need real chemical restraint for a procedure, that is a conversation with your veterinarian, not a paste. Timing matters. Give it well ahead of the event as the label directs rather than at the moment the horse is already worked up; there is nothing fast-acting about it. Two practical cautions. First, calming products including tryptophan are prohibited or restricted under the rules of many competition bodies — if you compete, check your association's medication rules before you use it, because "it is just an amino acid" is not a defence. Second, a horse that is suddenly difficult may be sore rather than badly behaved, and pain does not respond to a calming paste. Rule out the physical cause first.
