A cooling gel for horse legs, in a 454 g tub. You put it on after work, over the cannon and tendon area, and the volatile ingredients cool as they evaporate. It is the classic end-of-day brace: something to do for legs that have been asked to work, that most horses accept readily and that takes seconds compared with standing there with a hose. The cooling is real but it is surface cooling and it is brief. For a leg that has taken a genuine knock, cold hosing or icing for a proper stretch of time does far more than any gel, and that is worth knowing before you reach for the tub instead of the hose. Apply to clean, dry skin and rub it in with the hair. Keep it away from the eyes and off broken skin, cuts, scrapes or anything raw — a cooling gel on an open wound stings badly and does no good. Wash your hands afterward and do not wrap over it unless the label specifically says you can, because a product designed to evaporate turns into a heating product under a bandage and can blister a leg. Some of these products are considered prohibited substances or count as an unpermitted topical under competition rules — if you compete, check your association's rules before use. Finally, a hot, filled or painful leg is information. Gel makes it feel better on the outside without changing what is going on underneath. Persistent heat, filling or lameness needs a veterinarian. Keep the lid on tight so it does not dry out.
