An oral paste version of an electrolyte dose, in an 84 g syringe. The reason pastes exist is simple: powder in a water bucket only works if the horse drinks the water, and plenty of horses will walk away from a bucket that tastes different — usually the same horses you most need to get fluid into. A paste goes in over the tongue and you know it went in. Use it around the events that cost a horse sweat: hauling in the heat, a hard day's work, a long ride, a class in humid weather. Give it as directed and always have clean water freely available afterward. Electrolytes work by making the horse thirsty and holding the fluid it drinks; without water in front of the horse, you are pulling fluid into the gut and making dehydration worse rather than better. Because it is a single-dose syringe, it travels well — trailer tack box, saddle bag, gooseneck. That is its real advantage over a pail of powder for people who are away from the yard. Keep in mind what this is not. A horse in genuine trouble after work — dark gums, skin that stays tented, quiet gut, tucked up and dull — needs a veterinarian and probably intravenous fluids. Paste electrolytes are for maintaining a working horse, not rescuing one. Store the syringe out of direct heat and check the label before dosing a horse with any kidney or metabolic problem.
