Where a ring insulator fails, it fails at the contact point. Wind works a conductor back and forth across the same few millimetres of plastic for years, and the wire eventually cuts a groove and then cuts through. The continuous support version extends the bearing surface behind the conductor rather than presenting it a single edge. The wire rides on a longer section of the body, so the same amount of movement is spread over more material and the groove takes far longer to form. On a fence meant to last fifteen years, that is the version to choose over a plain ring. It screws into a wood post and comes in a bag of twenty-five or a tub of a hundred, which is the sensible way to buy them for a real fencing job. Use the matching screw bit in a drill. Treat it like any closed insulator: thread the line first, then tension. And leave enough slack in the conductor at each post that it can move a little with the seasons, because a wire pinned hard in every ring transfers its contraction to the corners, and the corners are what you do not want to be rebuilding.
