A gate in an electric fence has to do two things: carry current across the opening and get out of the way when you need through. A spring gate does both by stretching. The coil pulls the opening closed under its own tension, so there is no loose tape lying in the mud waiting to get run over. This kit covers an opening up to 5 m, about 16 feet 5 inches, which handles most quad and single-tractor width gaps between pasture cells. The spring hooks to a gate anchor insulator on one side and to an insulated handle on the other, and the fence current picks up at the anchor end. For a western Canadian yard the practical advantage is that a spring gate carries no fixed length of slack. Frost heave that shifts a post an inch or two either way does not put the gate on the ground, and the spring recoils out of the snow when you open it. Mount both ends on solid posts rather than on a t-post that will lean under constant pull, and keep the spring up off the ground when the gate is open.
