Details
Polywire is the workhorse of temporary fence. It is light enough to carry a full reel under one arm, it winds up fast at the end of a grazing rotation, and it costs little enough that you are not precious about it. This is the Basic line in the yellow and orange colour combination, which is the standard high-visibility choice. Colour matters more than people expect. A white line disappears against fresh snow, and green or brown vanishes in grass. Yellow and orange stay legible in both, which is worth something when you are strip grazing swath or bale grazing through the winter and moving a line every few days in poor light. Run it on tread-in posts for short-term work, or through ring insulators if the line is staying up for the season. Wind it back onto a reel rather than coiling it by hand. Polywire that has been dropped in a pile knots itself, and the fine conductors break where it kinks. Watch for breaks at those kink points, because a polywire fence almost always fails as a broken conductor long before the poly itself gives out.
