The knob pattern is the oldest shape in electric fencing and it has survived because it does one thing well. The conductor sits in a groove around the boss, with plastic standing between the wire and the post on every side. This one nails onto a wood post and takes polywire or plain wire. A hundred to the bag, with nails supplied separately so the fastener can be matched to the post rather than to the fitting. The knob shape gives the wire somewhere to sit when it is not under tension and somewhere to be wound when it is being terminated, which is useful at the odd post where a line has to be tied off partway along a fence rather than at a proper end assembly. On a straight run, drive the nail so the knob faces the stock side and the wire sits down in the groove rather than riding on the shoulder. A wire sitting on the shoulder of a knob insulator will walk off it under wind, usually onto the nail head.
