Permanent wire fence asks something different from an insulator than a temporary tape line does. It has to hold one position for fifteen years, through frost heave and machinery and stock, without the conductor working its way out. This fitting takes wire and polywire up to 2.5 mm, which covers the galvanized and high-tensile sizes normally run on a permanent hot line. It is moulded plastic and mounts either by screwing in or nailing on, so it goes onto new posts and onto existing fence lines alike. Ten to the bag. For steel wire the fit is close enough that the conductor does not rattle in the fitting under wind, which is what wears an insulator out from the inside on a long straight run. Leave the wire able to slide through, though. Steel expands and contracts through a wide range here, and a line pinned solid at every post will pull staples in the cold. Take strain at the ends and corners on fittings built for it and keep these for the run. On a permanent fence that is the difference between re-tensioning once a year and rebuilding a corner.
