Gate handles need somewhere to live. Hooked over a screw eye or a staple, the handle either pulls out under tension or shorts the gate to the post, and a gate that is not live is a gate stock learn about within a week. This is a screw-on fitting for wood posts, supplied two to the pack, which is the count for one gateway. It gives the handle a fixed hook point clear of the post so the tension of the gate rope or tape is taken by the fitting and not by whatever happened to be nearest. Set the height so the handle pulls straight when the gate is closed. A hook mounted too high or too low means the operator is pulling at an angle every time, and that is what eventually works the fitting out of the post. Screw it into sound wood. On a post that has weathered, move down or around to a face that still has grip rather than driving a longer screw into the same soft spot.
