Running a hot wire tight against a line of T-posts on an existing barbed or page wire fence is asking for shorts, and stock learn to lean on the old fence anyway. Standing the live wire out from the post deals with both problems at once. This insulator clips to the T-post and carries the conductor 12.5 cm off the post face. It takes rope, polywire or plain steel wire, and comes 25 to the bag in yellow, which is easier to pick out when you are checking a line at dusk or working through snow. Set the height for the class of stock and keep it consistent along the run, since an offset that wanders up and down encourages animals to test the low spot. On a straight run the clip holds fine on its own; at any point where the wire changes direction, take the strain on a proper corner insulator instead of relying on an offset. Check the clips after the first hard freeze-thaw. Plastic that has been driven onto a post cold sometimes needs seating again once the ground moves.
