A line insulator only has to hold a conductor in place. A strain insulator has to hold the whole pull of the fence. At every corner, end post and gateway the rope is trying to drag itself to the post, and that is precisely where it must not touch. A rope resting on a steel post at a corner will earth out the entire fence. This one is made for rope. It carries the termination load and keeps the line clear of the post, and it belongs on both ends of every span that stops or changes direction. Two things go wrong with strain points in this country. The first is frost heave, where a corner post lifts over the winter and puts the whole run out of alignment. The second is the temperature swing. A rope tensioned in July can be hard as a bar at minus thirty. Use an equalising spring at the strainer, leave the rope moderately rather than brutally tight, and walk the corners in spring, because that is where a fence tells you what the winter did to it.
