On a long temporary line the reel is the bottleneck. Bringing in a couple thousand feet of polywire on a plain hand reel is several minutes of steady cranking, and it gets slower as your arm tires and the wind picks up. A 3:1 geared reel turns the drum three times for every turn of the handle. That is the whole feature and it is a good one. Less cranking means less time standing in a field in November, and it also means the wire comes in at a more consistent rate, which keeps it laying evenly on the drum instead of piling to one side. A badly wound reel is a tangled reel next spring. This is the reel to buy if you are doing serious rotational grazing rather than fencing off the odd corner. Daily or every-second-day moves across a summer add up to a great deal of winding. Hang it on the end post rather than holding it, keep tension on the line as it comes in, and store it wound. Left loose in a shed, any reel of polywire finds a way to knot itself.
