Once a fence system gets past one paddock, being able to shut off part of it becomes a real convenience. A cut-out switch is installed in the fence line at the point where a branch run leaves the main line, and it opens that branch while everything upstream stays live. The typical use is a place with several pastures fed off one energizer. You want to work on the west fence, or a section is grounded out under a downed tree and reading low, or you are moving cattle through a lane and would rather not get hit while you sort them. Instead of walking back to the energizer and killing the entire system, and then forgetting to turn it back on, which is how stock end up out overnight, you flip off only the section you are working on. It also makes fault-finding much faster. Kill one branch at a time and watch what the fence tester does, and you have narrowed a short down to a single run in a few minutes instead of walking miles of line. Mount it on a solid post at a spot you can still find in a snowdrift.
