Rakes go missing in ways other tools do not. They get set down against a wall the same colour as they are, laid flat in a stall and covered by the next forkful of shavings, or left leaning in a corner of the run behind a gate. Orange is the practical answer, because there is nothing else in a barn that colour. Manufacturer dimensions are 43 by 20 by 168 cm (17 by 8 by 66 inches). The aluminium handle keeps the weight down over a long session and, unlike wood, it does not swell, rot or work loose at the head after a few wet winters. Length is doing quiet work here. At 168 cm you reach into the back corner of a stall from the doorway and sweep out toward yourself, rather than stepping in, turning round and dragging material over ground you have already done. Rinse the head off if you have been through anything wet and stand the tool up to dry. Material left to set between the tines hardens into something you will need a wire brush and a bad mood to remove.
