Handle weight is what decides whether a rake gets used properly. Wood is heavy and eventually rots at the socket; steel is heavier still and cold enough in January to hurt through a glove. Aluminium is the sensible middle. It does not soak up water, it does not splinter, and it takes a good deal of the load out of the job when you are picking a row of stalls one after another.
