Wooden-handled forks break at the socket, and they always break in the middle of mucking out. An aluminum shaft removes that failure point and takes a lot of weight out of the tool at the same time, which you notice about an hour into a barn cleanout. The head is roughly 43 cm (17 in) wide with long, closely spaced curved tines moulded in one piece. Wide enough to lift a real load of bedding, with gaps fine enough that manure stays on and clean shavings sift through. Overall length is about 168 cm (66 in), so most adults are not stooping over it. Two grips make the difference. There is a D-handle at the top for control and a sliding grip partway down the shaft that you can set where your lower hand naturally falls. Moving that grip changes the leverage, and setting it right is the difference between a fork that works and one that fights you. Plastic tines are quieter than steel and will not tear a rubber mat, which is the usual argument for them in a stall. They will snap if you use the fork as a pry bar on frozen manure, so keep a steel fork for that and let this one do what it is good at.
