Half the small jobs in a barn need two things, a step and a place to put the tools. Fetching both is why the job gets put off. A box that does both means you carry it once, and it is a seat when you are done. The box measures about 46 by 36 cm with a 30 cm rise (18 by 14 by 12 in), which is a comfortable step height and a comfortable sitting height for trimming feet or working on tack. The lid is hinged with a latch, there is one removable tray in the top for small parts, and the deeper space below takes the bulky things. It is moulded in polypropylene and rated to 180 kg (400 lb). Red makes it findable, which matters for a thing that gets left wherever the last job was. It also reads as equipment rather than furniture, so it is less likely to disappear into the house. Keep the tray for the things that get lost, hoof picks and fencing pliers and a roll of tape, and the bottom for the rest. Being closed and weather resistant, it can live outdoors under a lean-to without the contents rusting the way an open tote lets them.
