Tuff Stuff square pan
A square plastic feed pan about 46 cm on a side, taking 9.5 litres of feed or a full 23 kg mineral block.
Details
Round pans get pushed. An animal noses the rim, the pan rolls up on its edge, and the feed goes on the ground. Flared square sides change the geometry: there is no continuous curve to ride up on, and the wide flat base has to lift a long way before anything tips. It measures roughly 46 by 46 cm and 13 cm deep (18 by 18 by 5 inches), holding about 9.5 litres, or 2.5 gallons. It will also take a 23 kg (50 lb) mineral block, which is the job most people buy it for, since a block sitting in a pan stays out of the mud and what crumbles off it is still there to be eaten rather than lost into the ground. The material is recycled low-density polyethylene, moulded in one piece with no seams or fasteners. It flexes under a hoof rather than cracking, and nothing in it can rust. Shallow is deliberate. A pan this wide and low can be used by more than one animal at a time and it is easy to see into, so you know at a glance whether feed has been cleaned up or whether something has gone off its ration.
