The bucket that goes missing is always the plain one. Anybody can pick up a black pail and not think about it. An unmistakable colour is a surprisingly effective way of keeping a specific bucket attached to a specific job, and pink is about as unmistakable as it gets. It holds 4.7 L (5 US quarts) at roughly 25 cm across and 17 cm deep (10 by 6.5 in), with a wire bail handle in moulded side lugs. Small enough for a child to carry, which is the other common reason these get bought. They are the practical size for someone learning to do chores. Reserving it for one product is the habit worth forming. The milk bucket, the wash bucket, one particular supplement: pick one and stick to it. Colour is what makes the rule enforceable without labels that peel off in a wet barn. Polyethylene handles cold well and does not crack when it is dropped on frozen ground, which happens more than anyone admits in February. Rinse it out and store it inverted so it dries.
