Chores at five in the afternoon in January happen mostly in the dark, and a dark bucket set down in a stall or beside a bale is gone until you trip over it. Orange is the one colour that holds up against snow, mud, straw and a dim shed all at once. Capacity is 5 quarts, near enough 4.7 litres, in a body about 25 cm in diameter and 17 cm deep (10 by 6.5 inches). The handle is heavy gauge galvanised wire and the interior is smooth and non-porous, so there is no rim seam or moulding line holding old feed where you cannot see it. The plastic is chemically neutral, BPA free and rated for heat, cold, UV and impact. Small buckets get carried out to places you would not carry a large one, which is exactly how they get left behind. Fence line repairs, a load of eggs, water for a pen out in the far paddock. Orange is the colour that comes back. Wash it, tip it and store it upside down or nested. Left the right way up outdoors it fills with rain, and a bucket with a solid disc of ice in it is no bucket at all until March.
