Colour coding a barn only works if you commit to it. The moment somebody grabs whichever bucket is nearest, the whole system is dead and you are back to guessing what was last in it. Green is a good colour to hand to one particular job and defend, because it is distinct at a glance from red, orange and blue even in poor light. Plenty of operations use it for the hay side of things, or for a specific pen, or for the bucket that only ever holds water. It matters less which convention you pick than that it stays the same for everyone who walks into the feed room. The bucket itself holds 5 quarts, roughly 4.7 litres, measuring about 25 cm across by 17 cm deep. It carries a heavy gauge galvanised bail, has a smooth non-porous interior with no seam to trap feed, and the plastic is BPA free and resistant to heat, UV, impact and cold. Straight sides mean it stacks and unstacks cleanly rather than jamming, and it holds the same measure at any depth, which makes portioning by eye more reliable than it is in a tapered pail.
