Ask anyone who feeds twice a day what they actually reach for and it is usually the small bucket. Full-size pails are heavy before they are useful. A five-quart holds enough for one animal and can be carried in one hand while a gate gets opened with the other. The dimensions are modest, roughly 25 cm across the top and 17 cm deep (10 by 6.5 in), holding 4.7 L. The wire bail hangs it on a nail, a hook, or over a rail, which is the real reason these do not end up on the floor collecting dust. Forest green is a dark colour, so it hides staining from molasses, mineral and everything else that discolours a light bucket over a season. If you care what the shelf looks like, dark plastic ages considerably better than white. The smooth wall is the maintenance story. Nothing to trap feed, no ribs, no seams. A rinse under a tap does most jobs and a brush handles the rest. Store it upside down and it stays that way.
