Big buckets get used for everything, and that is exactly the problem. A small one stays dedicated. At 4.7 L (5 US quarts, 1.25 gallons) this holds a single feed or a measured amount of supplement, which means it does not become the general-purpose thing that carries disinfectant one day and grain the next. It is about 25 cm (10 in) across and 17 cm (6.5 in) deep, moulded in polyethylene with a wire bail handle seated in two moulded side lugs. The bail is the right choice at this size, since it swings down out of the way for stacking and carries the load over the centre so the bucket does not tilt as you walk. Blue is worth committing to something specific. Water, or a particular supplement, or the wash bucket. The rule that saves trouble is one colour per purpose, and it works because it needs no labels and survives every person who works in your barn. Buckets this size nest, so a stack of six takes the shelf space of one and a half. Rinse and invert rather than stacking wet, or the inside of the stack stays damp for a week.
