Mixing anything in a bucket is a fight. You cannot get a hoe or a paddle across the bottom, and whatever is in the corners never gets wet. A shallow rectangular tub with a flat floor and low walls is the shape that actually works, whether you are mixing mortar, a batch of soaked feed or potting soil. This is the small size in the mixing tub range, about 71 by 51 cm with a 15 cm wall (28 by 20 by 6 in), holding roughly 42 L (1.5 cubic feet). It is light enough empty to hang on a nail and small enough to fit in a truck box or through a doorway without turning it sideways. The polyethylene is non-reactive, so it takes fertilizer, feed, oil, solvents and mortar without staining or degrading. Cured mortar also releases from flexible poly far more easily than from steel. Let it dry, flex the tub, and most of it cracks off. Bear in mind these are outside measurements with a moulding variance of 25 to 40 mm (1 to 1.5 in). If it is going into a tight space or onto a rack, measure the one you get.
