Hook-over feeders take abuse from two directions: the animal pushing into them and the fence they hang on. Plastic hook-overs eventually crack at the hook, which is precisely the spot you cannot repair. Rubber flexes at that joint instead of failing there. This is the 17 L (18 quart) size, a square body with a hook-over back. The square shape sits flat against a rail or panel and gives a wider feeding face than a round feeder of the same volume, which matters when two animals want to eat at the same time. Eighteen quarts is a substantial feed. It suits a horse on a full ration, or two or three smaller animals fed together, and loaded it is heavy enough that it does not swing about while they eat. Lift it off when the feed is gone. A hook-over left in place collects rain and snow, and even rubber gets tired of holding a frozen block from November to March.
