Ask anyone with a shelf of feed pans which one they reach for and it is usually the middle size. Nine quarts, about 8.5 litres, is a full ration for a horse, a decent feed for a pair of goats or calves, and still small enough to carry in one hand and stack five deep. The rubber body is the reason these outlast plastic. It is heavy for its size, so it stays where it is set instead of skidding across a concrete floor when an animal noses it. It flexes under a hoof or a boot rather than splitting. And ice knocks straight out of it, which in this part of the country is the property that determines how long a feeder actually lasts. Nine quarts also happens to be a useful measuring size. Once you know what a given feed looks like at half and three-quarters in this pan, you can portion by eye reliably, and consistency in a feed pan is worth more than precision with a scoop. Rinse and stand them on edge to dry. Stacked wet, rubber pans hold moisture between them and pick up a smell that takes a while to shift.
